We have pleasure offering this wonderful work - it is not a reproduction or a print of any kind, but an original work.  It may well have been a painting/drawing made to try out images prior to producing a lithograph or series of lithographs.  The work is not dated but stylistically would belong to the 1960s.

Joan Miro (1893-1983) was, of course, one of the giants of twentieth century art.  Born in Spain, he spent much of his life working Paris.  He was particularly associated with the Surrealists; Andre Breton called him "the most Surrealist of us all". He was a colourful and fascinating character, who created his own highly individual universe of symbols, signs and idiosyncratic "occupants" - all in vibrant, vivid and magical colours.

Although his work is often characterised as colourful and even playful, it is important to recognise that his work can also reveal the exploration of personal anxieties - in his own inimitable way.

This work is a really fabulous painting/drawing, executed on an off-white/pale cream artists' paper, in gouache and ink. The contrast between the "blotchy" orangey/ochre and pale blue background and the controlled drawing with strong primary colours that interacts with it makes for a particularly successful and satisfactory whole.

The are three main characters or protagonists.  We recognise a horned bull (a very appropriate figure for a Spanish artist - echoing Picasso's obsession with bulls).  The smaller figure is enignamtic; the third figure seems to be female (?) - perhaps even an angel (if those are wings?).

Quite often it is best not to "over-deconstruction" Miro's work; his worlds are are often intended to be natural but also un-natural, human and cosmic, childlike but also unfathomable.

Overall, the work measures: height 31 inches (78cm), by width: 21 &-a-half inches (55cm). With the actual image area being: height 24 &-a-half inches (63cm), by width 15 &-a-half inches (39cm).  The work is signed, Miro, in ink (by brush - see the detail photograph).

Miro said, "for me a form is never something abstract; it is always a sign of something.  It is always a man, a bird, or something else."  In this case a bull, an angel and Miro? or a matador? or us?  It is a fascinating, magical and beautiful image.

This is a completely original work of art; it is not a print or reproduction of any kind.  Miro was a very prolific artist who also enjoyed a long career.  This work is offered without formal provenance having come to us, in a small accumulation of works, many superb, but without records, apparently acquired in the 1970s and 1980s. They were believed to have been acquired in Europe (probably Switzerland) by a UK businessman and financier.  We will try to help the successful winning bidder where we can,
